White people : Your opinion is not invalid because of your skin color. It’s invalid because of your attitude. It is not your job to police, talk over, dismiss, dictate, or mock the social and political issues POC bring up amongst themselves, and for themselves. If you act like a dominating know-it-all, you will be told to shut the fuck up.

-

So why is your race even mentioned? To express one or both of the following points :

  1. Your perspective is heavily influenced by white culture/teachings, or possibly worse, that your behavior is typical of a white supremacist.
  2. You are not a part of the ethnic group who is discussing their issues, meaning your point of view isn’t actually relevant to the issue at hand.

What is it with Ghetto Names

ethiopienne:

sumney:

I get it now.

All my life, I grew up being told that “black” names are ghetto and held by people who are likely to be trashy. If you know a girl named Laquisha, Latoya, Shaniqua, or Kelendria, she’s probably the neighborhood hoodrat, and even names like Tyrone and Tyrese are blacklisted in our society (pun intended). Statistically, it’s been proven that resumes and job applications that bear these names are more likely to go unread or end up in the trash can. [Translation: you’re less likely to be hired if you are obviously black.

But of course, names are alright if they are unquestionably mainstream (read: white) - Benjamin, Elizabeth, William, etc. Names are also fine if they are from a minority culture, as long as they are not identifiably a product of African-American culture; Alejandra, Lucia, Ivanka, Pierre, Elena, Boris, and Armando, are acceptable, exotic, and can even be beautiful. You might get teased on the playground, but your name is less likely to be a stigma or bad luck charm that follows you for the rest of your life.

When I worked at Hollister (not something I’m proud of), one of my white bosses was named Chante. She told me how people were often surprised when they met her, and would say thinks like “you’re not black!” or “what a ghetto name for a little white girl!” Turns out, her name was French. Her family was French. But because Chante has become such a popular name in the black American community, people have started to see it as ghetto. It’s losing its value because it’s associated with blackness.

A few weeks ago, I met a black girl named Shizuki. I immediately thought what an interesting ghetto name. I’m not exempt from prejudice. Such thoughts come to me once in a while, and I have to reprimand myself for upholding racist ideals instilled in me by American society. I asked her what her name meant, and she told me it was Japanese. Turns out, she was born in Japan and grew up there. Imagine how stupid I felt - and rightly so.

And now I suddenly understand why black names are frowned upon. Because things that are black, in this country, are ghetto. “Ghetto” is synonymous with poor, trashy, uncivilized, and ill-mannered. Because black names are ghetto, they are inherently ugly and unattractive, and names likes Tierra and Mo’nique (which I find aesthetically pleasing) will automatically be regarded as ugly. Simply put, the only reason why black names are bad… is because they are held by black people.

Bolding for emphasis mine.

Dear Lobdell

korraful:

In RHatO, can you PLEASE not make people of color (especially your Asians and African Americans) either:

A. Exotic Wise Old Healers
B. Cowardly Victims
C. Villains.

Can we get one POC who’s a good-ish character, just one pretty please. Like all the villains we have seen so far are (Susie (Chinese), African American police woman, Untitled (Tibetian-esque?), That Talon guy (Japanese-ish), Hong Kong triads, that green monster guy (African American) the Middle Eastern terrorists) the wise old healer with the Hello Kitty thing is Tibetian-looking. Oh and that Nezha-Avatar Aang-esque guy with the memories. And is it just me or does she look like the tree from Pocahontas. She doesn’t seem like a CHARACTER at all, but rather that Magical Asian. And the other Asians we see is that girl who’s village was saved by Jaybird. Who was afraid to fly near the storm.

And there is quite a lot of Asianic influences in this work. Such as the dragons, Jay’s twin blades (tanto ??? )  the whole Count of Owls, the Hong Kong triads and the lily motifs. Just please. I get that it’s super pretty but the exotification of Asian culture is really, fucking pissing me off. If we don’t see any actual Asians. Who y’know…aren’t evil.

It’s rather imperialist, we’ll take your dragons, your roofs, your culture, your city and we’ll put this on display and oh, we’ll also show your people but your people are bad guys (and our white main character has to protect the white villain who is BETTER THAN YOU)

While the heroes are either white or not human.

(different anon) You've posted before that you get annoyed when POC's are used as villains or thugs in comics. This is completely understandable. How would you react then, if POC's and woman were used as Loki's minions at the beginning like you've just suggested. As a POC I'd be a bit annoyed at only being used as a background character but I suppose it's better than nothing, yes?

(More avengers spoilers here sorry)

Okay so here’s the thing:

In comics, you have a lot more freedom with characters because the limit is imagination, time, and ink.

If you are a comic industry person and the majority of the characters of color you help develop are villains, thugs, or pimps, then you should possibly rethink things because you are probably unconsciously fitting people into stereotypical molds.

When the world you creates exists on the paper and you don’t have to worry about paying actors or stuff like that, it’s a lot harder to understand why rampant stereotyping happens because there are no casting costs to cut, no run times to work with. Unless the writer you’re working with says no POC anywhere, you can have POC wherever you want.

On some level I do feel the same about that in movies, but there’s a difference to me. There weren’t that many POC in that film at all (and seriously the one thing I’m not talking about is the scene with Bruce in India but Racebending.com handled that issue very well) so at some point, I am just like “Geez, I might as well take what I could get.”

Especially because Loki’s minions were not villains of their own volition. I’m pretty sure only the actual army were doing their thing because they were bad.

Everyone else was under some mind-control shit and that isn’t their fault.

If one or two of the SHIELD agents that Loki had with him early on had been people of color (or even another woman because I think there was one scientist that was a lady maybe), it would have been cool because they weren’t actual villains.

Now if every single one of his minions had been POC… that would have been weird and kind of uncomfortable to watch. I’d probably have to sit down and think about my feelings some more if that happened.

And as a POC I get pissy as HELL when I’m trying to indulge in a body of media and the only people that look like me are in the background, but the Avengers has Nick Fury and I am eternally in Samuel Jackson’s thrall so like there are things I will put up with for that man.

So like I had the similar thought of “i supposed background is better than nothing” and it was followed fast by “man at least we had one badass POC as a main character…”

can i ask why it is so hard for some White people to believe that children do wonder why no one looks like them in the media? why is that so hard for you to believe?

So, apparently Liam Hemsworth is being cast to play Ali Baba in “Arabian Nights.”

captain-iman:

Expect a long rant because I am so angry that I have cried and screamed and I need to channel my anger into something productive. Like Tumblr.

But I think I really need to talk about why it is totally and completely wrong that a WHITE actor like Liam is cast as an obviously ethnic character.

It’s funny (not) how people can so quickly forget that...

poemsofthedead:

It’s funny (not) how people can so quickly forget that Black people with natural hair styles have difficulty finding jobs and receive pressure on the job to change

whereas that does not happen to white people who try to wear braids, locs, or just frizzed out “wild” hair.

This has been proven time and time again. A major women’s magazine was called out for referring to Black women’s natural hair as “unprofessional” just a few years ago. And magazine editors are relatively liberal/progressive compared the HR/management in most companies/npo’s. A lot of us have multiple anecdotal evidence we could provide for this also.

Similar to how Muslim women (and others who follow religions that they believe mandate it) have the legal right to wear hijab but have to fight like hell to get it accepted by most companies (and often have to modify the style/color choice to make the company more willing to allow it), but white women can come into the office in “fashionable” wraps and everyone compliments them on how cool they are.

And yes, tattoos & piercings have to be covered in many jobs - but not all! And white people with ink or other mods still have a better chance of getting the job than a POC with the same ink or mods simply because your mods don’t completely negate your privilege as a white person.

When white people do these things, they are viewed as “edgy”, “artistic”, “creative”, “eccentric”, “fashionable”, “forward thinking”, “progressive”, etc. but at the end of the day they do not face SYSTEMIC discrimination for it. It sometimes makes things a little more complicated for them, but it does not actually hold them back. I know they get some shit for it but it doesn’t make or break their lives, and they have choice if they are going to do it, knowing the potential (minimal) consequences.

When POC do things that are natural to us, part of our historical/cultural/spiritual background, we are “too ethnic”, “too in your face”, “unprofessional”, “confrontational”, “ghetto”, “primitive/backwards”, “inflexible/unwilling to play the game”, etc. And it actually is used to withhold opportunities from us. We are dehumanized or pathologized for it, even if it is a tradition that is so important to our identity that we don’t really have a “choice” to not do it, even knowing that the consequences will be great.

#someone write me a fic about long-suffering Nick Fury and all the white-ass superheroes he’s got to keep in line #someone do that for me#race #avengers #nick fury

Don’t ask me how much I really want to be this person…

God, I think Nick Fury would just wind up sending some people off on the worst missions possible just because the alternative would see him pitching people off of the hover carrier left and right when they start that shit. (Although, I’d pay to see that too come to think of it)

I love your post about how whites are weirded out about the significance of PoC in the media, so PLEASE don't take this at me attacking you. Although i do know a lot of whites who are not aware that's even an issue, i also know a lot of them who do, and your posts makes it seem as though you assume ALL whites do that. Im sorry, i don't mean to come off as 'oh, i'm victim, do me justice blah blah blah', i would just rather not be characterized as someone who doesn't care.

Okay I see where you’re coming from and here’s the thing:

If you (or any other non-POC reading my posts) are not racist or ignorant about race issues, then I’m obviously not talking about you or to you.

I’m not going to always write “some white people” in a sentence to get it across that I’m not talking about the ones that aren’t racist but that doesn’t mean that I think 100% of the white people in the world are awful human beings.

If you’re not a white person that is aware of these issues, good for you.  I always get a smile on my face when I see that people that aren’t POC are aware of their privilege and working to educate others.

However, a significant amount of the white people I have come into contact with on the internet as well as in my offline life have been absolutely ignorant of these things to the point where they’ve tried to school me on racism or explain why they should be able to use the n-word.

So when I’m writing about racist white people and I usually say it just like that, if you’re not a racist white person, I daresay you have nothing to worry about and nothing to feel bad about.

I’m not characterizing you specifically as a person who doesn’t care (especially since I have no idea who you are), but there are people out there that’d be happy if they could go without seeing a POC ever again.

People who think responses to being told they’ve done something that’s racist is to do something more racist.

Or people who accuse POC who racebend white characters in media like Lord of the Rings of racism.

And they’re usually people that don’t think that they’re racist.

I’m talking to them.

Not you.
